The provincial government has announced Fredericton will be the demonstration site for introducing midwifes into the New Brunswick healthcare system.
The demonstration site will be managed by the Horizon Health Network.
A lead midwife will be hired within the next week or so.
The job will include developing procedures and policies to make sure the practice is held in a supportive and organized environment.
Once a lead midwife is hired, three more midwifes will be hired at the Fredericton location.
The goal is to give families in New Brunswick more options when they make important decisions around pregnancy and childbirth.
Midwives provide care during normal, low-risk pregnancies, labour, postpartum care, as well as the newborn period.
