Finance Minister Cathy Rogers made a stop in Saint John last night as part of the provincial government’s public consultation tour before the next provincial budget for 2017-2018 is finalised
Rogers asked those who attended whether or not the provincial government should accelerate, slow down or maintain its pace in terms of balancing the budget.
Unifor Atlantic Regional Director Lana Payne thinks the provincial government should maintain its pace.
Rogers also asked what new or other priorities the government should look at, and what should be done with revenue generated from carbon pricing.
Payne thinks the government should spend more on child care while Michael Saunders thinks the province should implement what’s known as a soda or sugar tax because of the high rate of diabetes in New Brunswick. Local restaurant owner Elizabeth Rowe thinks the province should privatize liquor stores instead of going to court to prevent consumers from buying liquor at a cheaper price in Quebec then taking it back to New Brunswick.
