A call to return citizenship to so-called “lost Canadians”.
NDP Citizenship, Immigration, and Refugees Critic Jenny Kwan is calling attention to people who have lost their status as Canadian citizens through loopholes in immigration law.
Kwan wants the Immigration Minister to update the Citizenship Act, which she says treats some like second-class citizens.
“People who could all of a sudden wake up and be declared no longer a Canadian,” says Kwan. “I’m calling on the Minister to adopt my private members bill to fix these absurd situations once and for all.”
Kwan says she spoke with a woman who’s lived in Canada her whole life but fell through the cracks in 2004 when Citizenship and Immigration Canada changed the rules.
Kwan says the woman is the child of a war bride, and CIC accepted her proof of status for decades prior to 2004, only to declare that she was no longer a Canadian.
Kwan says in 2007, the United Nations named Canada one of the top offending countries for making its citizens stateless in the report posted below.
