Post-Secondary Education Minister Donald Arsenault doesn’t regret setting the cap for the TAB program at $60,000.
The program provides free tuition to New Brunswick students who come from a family in financial need with a combined household income of $60,000 or less.
Arsenault says the provincial government is working at enhancing the program to allow more students to benefit from it.
He says a hard cap was set because a sliding scale would have delayed the free tuition program until the fall of 2017 and the provincial government wanted to help students now.
Arsenault says 36-percent of students who applied for financial assistance this year qualified for free tuition.
Arsenault was at the UNB Saint John campus to announce more than $216,000 in provincial funding for the Promise Partnership, which supports high school students within priority neighbourhoods in Saint John through mentoring and tutoring programs.
