DEC members in Anglophone South discussing the merits of a new provincial assessment system.
After years of consultation by the Department of Education, provincial assessments have changed. Superintendent Zoe Watson tells us they use to do more assessments but the decision was made to streamline the process.
She says it’s not an assessment where they receive individual results on students adding it’s more of a large scale provincial assessment looks at the skills of literacy, numeracy and science.
One DEC member asked what happens with the results of the students who are exempt because they know the student won’t pass.
Watson explains a teacher or the school team decide the assessment is not appropriate for a particular student and then those students are counted as unsuccessful.
She notes the number of exempt students in Anglophone South is low at 2 to 3 per cent.
