For some, the festive season is a time of joy.
But Counselling Therapist with the Atlantic Wellness Center Jason Jones says for others, it can be very difficult emotionally.
He adds there are several ways you can help, including reaching out and talking to somebody.
“Or finding ways to express yourself, doing something that you enjoy that you haven’t done for a while,” says Jones. “So if you’re into art, if you’re into music, writing, those things can become kind of a way of expressing yourself.”
Youth can experience sadness and loneliness over the holidays, especially if they are without family.
They are away from school, and may feel a loss of connection from their friends and teachers.
Jones says some youth who aren’t feeling festive, may actually feel broken because the expectation is to have a feeling of happiness at this time of year.
“Some can experience sadness and loneliness, they might have a lack of connection with some adults, such as teachers, or counsellors, [or] their friends, so they’re feeling more alone,” says Jones.
He says the best solution if you are feeling down this festive season, is to reach out to others for help.
