Christmas isn’t the best time to add a furry friend to your family.
Even though a new kitten or puppy with a big red bow, can be a great surprise under the tree, if you haven’t planned for it, it could turn out to be a very bad decision. Pets are a lifetime commitment.
Animal Welfare Officer for the Greater Moncton SPCA Nanette Pearl says once they are adopted and go to their forever home, they don’t want them to end up back at the shelter again, “If you are adopting for a family member or a friend, make sure they know. Make sure it is something they are ready for. We do adopt over the holidays, but we do not take impulse adoptions. We want to make sure that it is a decision that has been thought through with the head and the heart, so that the animal will be there for the rest of its life.”
Pearl suggests you buy the equipment needed for a pet first, A leash, or a litter box, and put that under the tree, “But the actual animal would not be involved, and you can think it through and bring the animal home once the holidays have settled down.”
