A 21 year old Moncton woman is facing a charge of public mischief, after reporting to RCMP that she was grabbed by a man in Mapleton Park on July 3rd.
Sergeant Chantal Farrah says she is now being accused of misleading police, by making a false statement.
The reported incident caused concern for many people who regularly use Mapleton Park to walk their dogs, for a daily run or just for a leisurely stroll.
But Sergeant Farrah says there is no need for alarm. She says a thorough investigation was conducted in this case, and information helped them to determine that the incident did not take place.
She adds that you should never hesitate to report a suspicious incident to police, “Please do not hesitate and do come forward with that information, and the RCMP will always investigate those reports thoroughly. When you see any suspicious activity, if you have been a victim of a crime, we are there to help you. If there is any instance of if you see something, ensure you report it to us.”
Megan DeWolfe is scheduled to return to Moncton court in September to face public mischief charges.
Farrah says there were a couple of other reports received in April of this year, in other parts of the city, but they are not believed to be linked, “They were reports of women being accosted in parks, are still ongoing investigations, and are being investigated separately.”
