Eddie Kiirou came from Kenya originally twelve years ago as an honour student at UNB Saint John and stayed to get his masters degree and started working.
We asked him how he feels about officially being Canadian.
“It’s surreal. It hasn’t sunk in yet maybe come tomorrow” Kiirou says laughing, “Obviously I am excited, it’s been a long time coming”.
Janice Boulos became a Canadian citizen after living in Saint John since 1962 after moving from Massachusetts.
She tells us she decided to do it in honour of Canada 150.
“It takes a while to get through everything so this is what I’m gonna do for 150” Boulous says.
Kerulk Patel came to New Brunswick to attend UNB Fredericton 10 years ago. He has a wife and baby.
“Canada has given us a lot, we are finally stable on our legs both working, both educated, graduated locally from New Brunswick so I think it’s now time to contribute locally to the community,” Patel says.
Mayor Don Darling attended the ceremony calling it the highlight of his week saying he is thrilled for all of them on becoming Saint Johners, New Brunswickers and Canadians.
