The Gallant government’s recent announcement that it’s creating a nuclear research cluster with what it calls small modular reactors, known as SMRs is getting a thumbs down from the leader of the provincial Green Party.
David Coon says the government could be using the $10.5 million on things like cutting down on wait times in hospitals and not having to close emergency rooms, not to mention the rising costs of our electricity.
“We’re paying increasing costs for our power in New Brunswick because of the tremendous expense of the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant, so the last place you want to put money is down the nuclear rabbit hole,” says Coon.
The Green Party Leader says “Small nuclear reactors have the potential to enable countries or even groups to manufacture nuclear weapons far more easily out of sight then when you are dealing with the large conventional nuclear power plants.”
