A strange occurence experienced by several people in the Deer Island-Back Bay area over the weekend, with residents in the area feeling vibrations and hearing a loud rumbling noise.
Cathy Richardson says she was awakened around 1 AM Sunday by noises she could not identify.
“It has been multiple people and we all heard and felt the same thing, we checked the U.S. Geological Survey website and it wasn’t registering any earthquakes that day, so we don’t really know what happened,” stated Richardson.
Richardson at first thought the noise was thunder or perhaps a low-flying aircraft.
The noise was intense enough to capture the attention of others, including Richardson’s daugher who was visiting a friend in Back Bay area who described the noise and rumbling like feeling an earthquake. Richardson spoke later with her daughter by phone, who recounted how the vibrations shook her friend’s house.
Checks by our our newsroom with Nav Canada, the country’s civil air navigation services provider confirmed the noises experienced by some residents were not likely to be aircraft. No lightning strikes were recorded in the area according to Environment Canada and checks with a local astronomer also confirmed no meteors were spotted which could have caused a sonic boom.
Without any initial explanation, the mystery noise heard and felt early Sunday for residents on Deer Island remains unsolved.
