Auditor General Kim MacPherson makes 14 recommendations in her report on education including maintaining the current 10-year provincial education plans and stabilizing the provincial assessment programs.
The audit includes the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in every provincial school district.
MacPherson says political interference is destabilizing the education system with successive governments changing priorities too often and moving the focus of educators away from teaching New Brunswick’s children.
MacPherson notes there have been five different provincial education plans over the last 15 years.
She also finds that poverty has teachers spending their time dealing with issues like hunger and inadequate clothing impacting students before they can even start teaching.
