Recovery efforts are underway in the town of Sussex after some intense flooding due to this week’s extreme weather.
Water levels in the creek began receding on Friday afternoon, after reaching a peak of 19.65 metres shortly after 4 a.m. Friday.
Allie Murchison, emergency management coordinator with the Canadian Red Cross, says they received a call late Thursday night to help out.
“We’re actually helping people all across New Brunswick right now,” said Murchison. “There are people affected in Moncton, in Sussex, in Fredericton. Currently, in Sussex, we’re helping 22 households.”
A total of 38 residents were evacuated, and while most have returned to their homes, about a dozen will get help from the Red Cross this the weekend.
Murchison said a lack volunteers on the ground in Sussex hampered their efforts to provide assistance to affected residents.
“We had to do our virtual and our more remote helping,” she said. “Because of the storm, we had people from Saint John, Quispamsis and Rothesay helping out — we didn’t feel comfortable putting people in harm’s way. If we did have people in Sussex, it would be easier to help more people out.”
Murchison said there are flood clean-up kits available at the Red Cross office on Willow Court and the Sussex Fire Hall, which include various cleaners, as well as gloves, mops and brooms.
