Now that it’s time to spring ahead with your clocks, it’s also a good time to think about smoke alarms in your home.
The Saint John fire department is reminding homeowners to change the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
Roy Noland with the SJFD says checking the alarms should be done annually, but a lot of people forget.
“We inspect multi-residential apartment buildings and during those inspections, often times we find 60 to 70 per cent of smoke alarms are not working,” he said in an interview.
He says its also a good time to check their placement, and to make sure there’s one on every level of your home.
“They’re better served to have those smoke alarms further away from the kitchen, closer to the bedrooms,” he said.
He suggests putting smoke alarms in the bedrooms for ease of access.
“That way they won’t have to either silence the smoke alarm or think that they have to take the battery out, which is the worst option,” he said.
