The province has made the decision to ban cat declawing.
A special meeting was held on Saturday where over 30 veterinarians took part in the vote.
Dr. George Whittle, registrar of the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association says the vote was a clear majority.
Whittle says the decision came amid new information on the controversial procedure.
“There’s more and more literature about the surgery and anytime there’s scientific literature there’s always to sides to everything,” said Whittle.
Special meetings are held in addition to annual general meetings to focus on specific issues.
Whittle says the bylaw was proposed at the general meeting but needed to be reworded.
Although few veterinaries still perform the procedure, the ban will be in full effect as of July 1st.
