Early childhood educators who have completed a one-year certificate program will now be eligible for a wage increase.
Early childhood development minister Dominic Cardy confirmed the news Thursday, just days after announcing the 75 cent an hour raise would only go to ECE workers with a two-year diploma or bachelor’s degree.
The two-year program was only recently made available in New Brunswick. Most early childhood educators have only completed the one-year program and would not have been entitled to the increase.
Cindy Butland, who owns a learning and afterschool centre in Moncton, says she is proud they were all able to band together, but this is just a first step.
“We do have some educators in our field that may not have any of their training but they have been (working) 15 plus years, some 25 years and they are not being recognized either,” Butland said.
Butland wants to see the increase retroactive to April 1.
