The trip was a dream come true volunteering in Honduras, the return journey however turned into a nightmare for nearly three dozen UNB students from Saint John and Fredericton.
Their flight got forced to land in Miami because of bad weather and American Airlines policy is to not provide any assistance because of this.
“If the cancellation is due to weather they very rarely provide assistance for food vouchers or accommodations, so it’s been a rough 26 hours, but we are hanging in there,” said Erin Cunningham.
Tyler Calnan says after eight hours in a line and being told they were not getting any help they began a Twitter conversation with American Airlines to state their case.
“Twenty of the students would be considered minors in the United States, we are low on cash and we are just looking for direction and what course to take to assure that we are going to have food and water and necessities that we need until our flight we had booked on Wednesday,” stated Calnan.
After a lot of people went to social media to show their concern for the students, two of the customer agents at their gate finally stepped in.
Cunningham says they got us food vouchers and hotel vouchers even though they were not authorized to do so.
They are to fly into Boston, then meet a bus driver who will bring them all back to New Brunswick.
