The Saint John Sea Belle’s choir reached a big milestone last weekend—the acapella group has been around for 50 years.
During a birthday celebration last weekend, the choir reflected on the special place it holds in the community, and in their lives.
The group of 45 to 50 women are one of ten choruses in the Atlantic region, and are currently ranked second.
Ann Connolly has been singing and performing with the Sea Belle’s for 10 years. She says the group was also the first chartered chorus in the region.
“We have a lot of history to celebrate. It’s been a busy 50 years for sure,” she said.
Connolly says being a part of the group has really improved her life, and gives her something fun and challenging to do during her retirement.
“We’re a very active, physical chorus when we’re on stage so you know, you have to have a fair bit of stamina and energy,” she said.
“It’s a real challenging experience to learn acapella style of music, but I find it very rewarding. It just allows you to expand your music skills and you meet wonderful women, and the singing can’t be topped as far as I’m concerned,” she said.
Connolly says she and other women have made lifelong friends through the choir, and it’s something that has become an important part of her life.
“It enhances your life when you’re a singer I think, especially when you sing in a group situation. it just lifts your spirits, it makes you feel better inside.”
The Sea Belle’s will be competing in a regional competition on may 31st in Sackville, NB. They are looking forward to seeing what the other choruses have to offer, and hope to win some prizes.
