It has not been as bad as last year where we had frost into mid-June, but farmers in the province are behind with their planting for the second year in a row.
Christian Michaud is president of the NB Agricultural Alliance and says we are looking at a delay in some crops getting harvested again.
“It’s just a very late spring we were lucky that we had sandy soil here in my area so we were still able to get stuff in the ground at a reasonable date, but elsewhere we are looking at everything being seven to ten days late this year,” stated Michaud.
Michaud has no idea how it will impact crop yields, he says that all depends on the growing season weather, but the first thing that will be late showing up at your local farmers markets will be strawberries.
“One of the first crops usually at the beginning of July or late June the harvest would start but the way it is going now I would figure the second week of July is the way it seems,” stated Michaud.
Some farmers have also been affected by the spring flooding and had to wait for their fields to dry in order to get their crops in.
