Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says he’s not happy the federal government will impose a carbon tax on his province next year.
Kenney’s first action as premier was to repeal the NDP’s provincial carbon tax, citing it as unfair to Albertans.
“I think it’s unfortunate that the Trudeau government wants to punish Albertans for heating their homes and driving to work. We were elected on a mandate to repeal Alberta’s carbon tax as soon as possible, which we did,” he told reporters.
He says he will now be challenging the federal imposition in court, “as an unconstitutional violation of our jurisdiction.”
“I’ve given instructions to our attorney general to prepare a judicial reference to the Alberta appeal court challenging the federal carbon tax as soon as possible,” he said.
He says his opposition to carbon taxes is supported by several other provinces, including Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick.
