Cannabis industry leaders will be meeting in Saint John for the second annual World Cannabis Congress.
The event will feature panels, workshops and more on the future and innovation in the cannabis industry.
Organizer Derek Riedle of Civilized says the event has grown in popularity after legalization, with 650 people in attendance.
“The world Cannabis Congress is designed to connect, lead and inspire the cannabis industry, and you know, almost a year into legalization here in Canada, we have a lot to discuss,” he said in an interview.
Namely, Riedle says there needs to be more cannabis research, so that more products can be developed.
“Cannabis research is something that’s been on the naughty list for generations because of prohibition, misinformation, and stigma. To us, it is absolutely critical that the cannabis plant is studied more,” he said.
Key elements of the plant, such as cannabinoids, have a variety of functions, but have yet to undergo rigorous research.
There are several panels on research at the conference, including one focused on New Brunswick on Sunday.
Riedle says retail and pharmacy giant Shoppers Drug Mart will be speaking at the event. Earlier this year, Shoppers announced their big plans to be a retailer for cannabis, selling it in their stores across the country.
“They are the first mainstream retailer to really embrace cannabis, and they will be discussing much more of their plans,” he said.
There will also be a special guest.
“We’ve got one of North America’s most notable media personality in Martha Stewart coming,” he said.
Riedle says Stewart will be giving a keynote on her involvement in the cannabis industry, which includes the creation of a line of CBD product.
The event runs Sunday to Tuesday at the Trade and Convention Centre. More information can be found online.
