Starting today, The Great Trail Treasure Hunt is back for round two, with more treasure boxes to find along Canada’s longest trail.
The aim of the Hunt is to get more people out using the trail and exploring the outdoors.
Jérémie Gabourg with the Trans Canada Trail says The aim of the Hunt is to get more people out using the trail and exploring the outdoors.
Those who find a box will get a code to redeem online, making you eligible for a number of prizes.
Gabourg says the first person to a box will also get a special coin from the Royal Canadian Mint.
Gabourg says there are lots of prizes available, including Nikon cameras, and Parks Canada passes.
“We will have prizes that will be drawn every week, and there will be a grand prize,” he explained.
New this year are prizes for the Trail’s “superusers.” People who find five or more boxes will be eligible for more prizes, including a new bike, and a hiking trip to Newfoundland.
Last year, all the boxes were found, except for one in Nunavut. Gabourg says the location might have been too remote, but they don’t really know why it was never found, and it remains a funny anecdote.
Gabourg says while some boxes may be hidden in the woods, they are built to withstand the elements, and any curious critters.
“They were conceived to avoid intrusions from squatters, who make think this is a great hiding or nesting place, so people should not be worried to find a surprise—or hairy surprise—in the boxes,” he said.
There will be 200 boxes to find this year. A map with GPS coordinates and a list of clues can be found online. The contest runs until August 18th.
