The Financial and Consumer Services Commission will soon be showing up at a festival or event in your area in hopes of helping you to protect your wallet.
Erin King says they are hosting something called pop-up Spend Smart Cafés.
“We want to go out and talk to consumers where they are and so we find that when we go to these festivals and coffee shops, we are able to engage with New Brunswickers and provide some information about how they can protect themselves when it comes to financial matters,” stated King.
They are also looking to talk to people about the so-called red flags when it comes to your finances.
“When you are told it’s a guaranteed investment, no investment is guaranteed so when you hear that it should be a big red flag or when it’s a limited time only and they try to rush you into a decision when it comes to making an investment,” King said.
There are also other ways scammers try to gain your trust, according to King.
“Using your social groups that you may belong to and then try to pitch you an investment opportunity, or you get a call late at night from someone claiming to be from the CRA or your bank saying your credit card is in trouble,” she said.
The Spend Smart Cafés will be set up in the following areas:
- Lumberjack Café, Saint Andrews, July 9
- Presse Cafe, Edmundston, July 17
- Sour Grapes Café, Oromocto, July 18
- Tazza Caffè, Neguac, July 23
- Café La Lieto, Dieppe, July 24
- Sand Sculpture Competition, New River Beach Provincial Park, July 27
