The Canadian Red Cross has closed a temporary shelter that opened last month in Miramichi.
Tenants were ordered to vacate a 42-unit apartment and hostel building after it had been declared unsafe by the provincial Fire Marshal.
While many found other accommodations, about a dozen had been making regular use of the shelter for sleeping, meals and access to washrooms.
The Shelter was set up at the request of the provincial Department of Social Development who agreed to cover logistical and other costs but only until mid-day Tuesday.
As of Monday night, only 3 people remained at the shelter.
Some tenants also pitched tents near the apartment building, hoping renovations are soon completed and the Fire Marshal’s non-occupancy order lifted.
