Former Liberal MLA Eugene McGinley has passed away at the age of 83.
McGinley died Tuesday at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton.
The Chipman, N.B., native was actively involved in Liberal politics since he was a teenager. McGinley began his political career as MLA for the city of Bathurst between 1972 and 1978.
He was re-elected in 2003 as MLA for Grand Lake-Gagetown and represented the riding until his retirement in 2010. During that time, he served as speaker of the legislature and Minister of State for Seniors and Housing.
In addition to his political career, McGinley was admitted to the bar in 1962 and practised law in Bathurst for nearly three decades.
He was honoured with the designation of Queen’s Counsel in 1985 and given a 50-year honourary membership with the Law Society of New Brunswick.
McGinley also worked as a research economist with the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council and served five years as chair of the New Brunswick Labour and Employment Board.
A funeral service will be held at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church in Fredericton at 2 p.m. Saturday.
