A group of very concerned scientists, conservationists and even industries are upset with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Atlantic Salmon Federation and have taken their frustrations to the people.
A huge full-page advertisement appeared in a weekend paper by the group known as CAST, Collaboration for Atlantic Salmon Tomorrow and Executive Director Andrew Willett says they have major concerns that the Atlantic Salmon is in serious trouble.
“It could be the Striped Bass in the Miramichi River system or it could be overfishing in the ocean, climate change and something that is going on in the ocean affecting their food, seals and climate change causing a rise in the river temperatures, stated Willett.
These are all reasons why CAST wants to conduct a Smolt-To-Adult Supplementation program in hopes of replenishing the stocks, but the DFO and ASF are blocking them.
“We have heard some vague and unfounded concerns that are not science, we are looking for published evidence that this Smolt-to-Adult Supplementation program is not a good idea and we have not received any from either the Department of Fisheries and Oceans or the Atlantic Salmon Federation” stated Willett.
Willett is urging people to get a hold of their MP in hopes of getting some action to save the wild Atlantic Salmon in the Miramichi River which is world-renowned for its salmon fishing.
