Hobbs & Shaw, the first film spin-off of the not-so-little franchise that could The Fast and the Furious, is the high-octane, gravity, reality and physics defying blockbuster answer to the doldrums of August.
FBI DSS lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Central Intelligence) and reformed former British Special Forces assassin-turned-mercenary, but in no way squeaky clean, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham, Spy) are as opposite as peanut butter and cement. However, when cyber-genetically enhanced criminal and terrorist, and self-proclaimed “Black Superman,” Brixton Lore (Idris Elba, The Wire) gains access to a biological agent that could wipe out humanity, the duo must grit their teeth and team up to save the world – while of course try to one up each other.
Despite the abundance of testosterone, the ladies of Hobbs & Shaw are the farthest things from damsels in distress. Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) plays Shaw’s sister Hattie, an MI6 field agent whose butt-kicking skills frankly leave all the men in the dust, and Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold) returns as the Shaw siblings’ mum, Magdalene Shaw.
Johnson and Statham’s chemistry from the previous Fast and Furious films made a spinoff a no brainer and establishes their spot between Starsky and Hutch and Ernie and Bert in pop culture’s lexicon of dynamic duos.
In the hands of David Leitch, producer of John Wick and director of Charlize Theron’s action spy thriller Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw will leave audiences pumped and eagerly anticipating the smack-talking duo’s next adventure.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw opens in theatres on August 2.
