With the warmer months rolling ahead, it may seem like the perfect time to pave older driveways and lane ways.
While it may seem good, the Better Business Bureau is reminding those looking for contractors to be wary of shady paving companies offering too good to be true deals.
Kristen Matthews, spokesperson for the BBB, says in the last year, they’ve received 12,000 inquiries into the paving industry around Atlantic Canada from consumers claiming to be mislead by companies, some of whom end up paying for a job that was never done.
“In most cases, we’re seeing that the business never returns,” said Matthews.
“They end up keeping the deposit, leaving the consumer out of pocket. Or, they do return and complete the job, however its clear the job was poorly done.”
Matthews says consumers should always obtain multiple quotes from different, reputable companies, get a written contract and look into their past work.
“Discuss your quotes with your contractor directly, and also ask them about the quality of product they use such as asphalt,” she said.
“We also recommend asking for references from the companies you contact. Any reputable company wouldn’t have an issue providing references for past work.”
