A well-loved Sussex-based company will be expanding, thanks to financial help from the government.
Mrs. Dunster’s, a bakery that specializes in donuts and renowned garlic cheese buns, received over $300,000 from both the feds and the province on Friday.
The money will be used to purchase automated equipment for its production lines, as well as create 24 new jobs, including two management positions.
The company says the funding will allow them to focus on growth, increasing sales, and building a solid team of experts.
“We are investing in equipment that will allow us to increase production of our famous Garlic Cheese Buns in order to keep up with demand in the Maritimes and to launch Garlic Cheese Buns in Newfoundland, Ontario and Quebec,” said co-owner of Mrs. Dunster’s, Rosalyn Hyslop, in a release.
“The funds… will enable us to improve our efficiencies by investing in equipment that will automate parts of our donut packaging process, allowing us to better utilize employees in other growing areas of the business.”
The federal government, along with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, is providing a total contribution of more than $284,000 for the projects.
“Mrs. Dunster’s is a wonderful example of how a small New Brunswick business with an exceptional product and a whole lot of hard work can become a major employer in a rural part of the province like Sussex,” said Bruce Northrup, MLA for Sussex-Fundy-St. Martins, in a release.
$84,500 will be going toward the garlic cheese bun project, $100,000 for the donut production line, and two payments of $50,000 to hire a human resources director and a director of process improvement.
Opportunities NB is pitching in as well, with $33,800 for the garlic cheese bun production line.
