The Seth Rogan produced R-rated comedy miraculously combines sweetness and raunch in the misadventures of three preteen boys eager to grow up, but who are (thankfully) still innocent to most of the world’s perversions.
After being invited to their first kissing party, sixth graders Max (Jacob Tremblay, Room), Thor (Brady Noon, Boardwalk Empire) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams, The Last Man on Earth) try to spy on Max’s next door neighbor Hannah (Molly Gordon, Booksmart) and her girlfriend Lily (Midori Francis, Ocean’s Eight), using Max’s dad’s very expensive drone, for pointers on how to kiss.
The girls confiscate the drone and the youngsters retaliate by stealing Hannah’s purse which, unbeknownst to them at first, contains ecstasy. The trio then end up embarking on a hilarious odyssey of mishaps, all the while trying to arrive at their party on time.
Despite the baby-faced preteens liberally dropping the F-bomb and discussing topics that would give any decent parent a heart attack, Good Boys’ comedy derives from how the boys mostly do not understand the adult situations, illegal substances and dirty innuendo they encounter. While the young protagonists get into many dubious hijinks, they are still (relatively) innocent, and genuinely trying to navigate approaching teenagerhood in the face of peer pressure, divorce and shifting friendships.
Good Boys opens in theatres on August 15.
