Earlier this week, the ethics commissioner determined Prime Minister Justin Trudeau broke ethics rules surrounding the SNC-Lavalin controversy.
Speaking to media in Moncton during National Acadian Day this week, federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer urged the six Liberal MPs who form a majority on the committee to call for an investigation.
“Let’s put this in perspective, Ms. (Jane) Philpott and Ms. (Jody) Wilson-Raybould were kicked out of the (Liberal) caucus for the sole crime of telling the truth. To this day, Justin Trudeau refuses to accept responsibility for his actions,” noted Scheer.
Scheer said he’s launching a campaign to encourage Canadians to urge the Liberal committee members to put their country before their party and vote to allow the Ethics Committee to do its work.
He also noted how Trudeau promised in 2015 that he would be ethical and accountable but adds the prime minister has proven he’s not as advertised.
Federal Labour Minister Patty Hajdu is standing by the prime minister.
In a statement to our newsroom, Hajdu noted Trudeau has taken full responsibility.
She goes on to say the former deputy prime minister and attorney general, Anne McLellan, “has made important recommendations about how to strengthen the openness, transparency and accountability of Canadian institutions.”
Hajdu adds, she “looks forward to implementing them.”
