Thanks to a Facebook post and some help from the community, a small dog’s life was saved.
Trixie, an 11 year old whippet from Saint John, was in desperate need of a donor for her second blood transfusion.
Dr. Chantal Houle of the Maritime Animal Hospital says due to this being her second transfusion, Trixie was at risk of having an allergic reaction.
After being unsuccessful with their list of donors, they put out a call on Facebook for anyone who might fit the criteria.
Just 10 minutes after the post was published, calls and messages were pouring in from pet owners willing to help.
Dr. Houle says after going through about 60 samples, they finally found a match.
She says the procedure went smoothly, Trixie is recovering well and vets are hopeful she won’t be needing a third transfusion.
