Jason Thorpe set out on his bike in Halifax on August 18 in an effort to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House in Atlantic Canada.
He stopped in Moncton on Thursday as part of his 1,700-kilometre journey throughout the Maritime provinces.
Thorpe was diagnosed with cancer at the age of nine and his family spent a lot of time at the Ronald McDonald House while he underwent treatment.
He was also very inspired by Rebecca Schofield and her #Beccatoldmeto movement.
Thorpe says before he started his journey, he had to mentally prepare himself to be alone for the ride, “Your why has to be pretty big to do something like this. You can’t be in it for selfish reasons at all. Those times when you are out there by yourself and it is raining and you are hungry, you have to have a reason to push through.”
He says everyone a long the way has been very supportive, “The smiles and the waves, and the honks have just been a great motivational push.”
During his stop in Greater Moncton, he visited the Rebecca Schofield All World Super Play Park in Riverview.
Thorpe is originally from Quispamsis but he now lives in Halifax.
His goal was to raise $7,000 before he started his ride and he has accomplished that. Thorpe says even more funds have been pouring in since he arrived in his home province of New Brunswick.
After Moncton, he’ll make stops in Sussex and Saint John, then Digby, N.S. He expects to arrive home in Halifax on August 27.
