A special march is taking place along the waterfront tomorrow morning in Saint John to raise awareness and money for research into Multiple Myeloma.
It is a rare debilitating blood cancer of white cells in your plasma and it can have various effects according to Susan Collins who is the head of a local support group for sufferers
“In our support group people who have had issues with bones, sometimes only discover the Myeloma because they have had back problems, something to do with their spine, they have had fractures,” said Collins.
Collins says her symptoms of the disease differed from others.
“A form of very extreme fatigue gave me the first indications that there was something wrong, they do a blood test and test for different indicators to see if there is Myeloma there,” said Collins
It is not a very common cancer either according to Collins.
It is very rare and is increasing in prevalence and the feeling is that some of it are because of the ageing population and the onset of this tends to be when you are in your sixties.”
The 2nd Annual Multiple Myeloma March will take place at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal on Sunday starting at 10 AM.
It will make its way along Harbour Passage, there will be music and food and plenty of awareness information about this illness.
