The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is reacting to comments made by the environment minister about the federal carbon tax.
Earlier this week, Catherine McKenna said the tax will only continue to rise until 2022.
But Paige MacPherson, Atlantic director of the federation, believes there are hints otherwise.
“The ambiguity from the government really shows, I think, that the carbon tax will continue to go up and government departments have said that it needs to go up in order to meet their Paris climate reduction targets,” stated MacPherson.
MacPherson also questioned why the federal government is now asking for input from the provinces, when initially it was a top-down approach, such as New Brunswick getting a carbon tax imposed on it by Ottawa.
“Provinces like New Brunswick have made it extremely clear that they do not want or need the carbon tax imposed upon them by Ottawa, so the logic here is really baffling that suddenly the provinces are going to be involved in this decision,” she said.
With a federal election coming up, MacPherson said there needs to be a concise outline of the carbon tax and any costs that will impact taxpayers in the future.
