The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has convicted 19 people in the Maritimes of offences under the Fisheries Act between early June and late July.
In New Brunswick, most of the nine convictions for Grand Manan fisherman were for fishing for lobster without a registration card.
Most of the fines were for $300 or less and in one case, a fisherman was fined $1000
for another charge.
Nova Scotia fisherman in the communities of Freeport, Tantallon and Mill Village were convicted of selling fish without a commercial license, for having untagged lobster traps and possession of undersized fish.
Fines ranged from $5000 to $10,000 and the forfeiture of lobster traps.
For selling eel without a commercial license, one Nova Scotia fisherman from Lockeport received a $10,000 fine, 100 hours of community service and must forfeit a vehicle.
He also can’t be within 20 metres of inland waters unless passing by in a vehicle but, not to fish.
