Hurricane Dorian is expected to have a severe impact on parts of the Maritimes this weekend.
Based on the latest forecast, Dorian will arrive on the coast of Nova Scotia on Saturday, and move through southeastern New Brunswick throughout the weekend before heading up to Newfoundland on Sunday.
Environment Canada meteorologist Jill Maepea says the storm will bring a large amount of rain in a short period of time.
“100 mm of rain is not out of the question with even possibly areas seeing locally higher than that. Hurricane Dorian will be moving through very quickly when it does reach our region, so the rain will be coming down very heavy,” she said.
Maepea says the brunt of the storm will be felt in Nova Scotia, and southeastern New Brunswick.
“They are likely to see the strongest winds. The areas of heaviest rains will be around that area, as well as off to the north west, western Nova Scotia, southeastern New Brunswick and P.E.I.,” she said.
She says weather warnings will likely be in place all weekend, with hurricane force winds expected.
“Wind gusts are likely to be also in the wind warning criteria, with gusts probably near the 100 km per hour, if not stronger than that. As well, with the wind, our leaves are in full foliage, so the wind could cause further damage,” she said.
Strong waves and storm surges could also be expected along coastal communities on Nova Scotia, P.E.I, and Newfoundland.
Many local areas could also experience flooding and power outages.
Maepea says it’s a good idea to batten down the hatches this weekend: bring any patio furniture indoors, cancel any outdoor activities, and keep inside.
