Old and new mixed at the CCMAs.
The biggest night in Canadian country music honoured the next wave of country talent at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday night.
The 2019 CCMAs struck a progressive balance between the old and new through its co-hosts Dallas Smith, the reigning CCMA Male Artist of the Year, and Billy Ray Cyrus, country music legend who has experienced a reinvigoration of sorts thanks to the record-breaking nineteen week Billboard Number One collaboration with rapper Lil Nas X, Old Town Road.
Calgary holds a special meaning to Cyrus; it was where the musician was awarded, at the bowling alley Silver Dollar Saloon, his first Gold record for his 1992 album Some Gave All, which featured his runaway hit Achy Breaky Heart.
Smith and Cyrus opened the show with individual musical performances, and a multitude of country acts performed throughout the show, such as Meghan Patrick, Old Dominion and Tebey.
A synthesis of the old and new points the way for the evolution of the country music genre, as evidenced by Cyrus’ savvy rap collaboration and reflected in the winners of this year’s CCMAs, with Grand Prairie musician Tenille Townes winning her four nominations, including Female Artist of the Year and Single of the Year for Somebody’s Daughter.
