New Brunswick’s blueberry industry has traditionally been concentrated in the southwest region and in the Sussex area.
But the province has been pushing for expansion in recent years and it has really taken hold.
Bleuets NB Blueberries (BNBB) vice-chair Ed Goguen says the industry has been exploding in another part of the province.
“About 15 years ago, the northeast… up in the Tracadie area and on the (Acadian) peninsula started to get into blueberries and they have grown dramatically,” he notes.
Goguen adds 70 per cent of the province’s crop now comes from the northeast region.
Overall, New Brunswick is now the biggest producer in Atlantic Canada.
Producers have described this year’s blueberry season as being an average one.
