An event on Saturday aims to help people identify with the challenges faced by over 73,000 New Brunswickers with mobility issues.
The Wheelchair Challenge is being held at the Diamond Jubilee cruise ship terminal where teams of five tackle an obstacle course in a wheelchair.
Elizabeth Murphy of Ability NB says you don’t need to be on a team of five to take part, you can show up and be added to a team.
“We’ve got teams of five that will compete and there will be prizes as well to be awarded at the end. Folks are welcome to sign up as individuals if they’d like, and we’ll pair you up,” she explained.
Murphy says the event is fun to watch.
“We’ve got really nice multi-sport wheelchairs thanks for our ParaNB program that has a whole host of equipment that we loan out for free for adapted sport and recreation,” she said.
Murphy says this is also a key fundraiser for them.
“It’s extremely impactful. We are a non-profit and a lot of people don’t know that, so it’s important for us to communicate to folks we rely on donations to fuel our services, so it’s extremely important,” she said.
People of all abilities are welcome to take part in the event and wheelchairs will be provided.
The event runs from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
