A family-friendly event born out of tragedy is celebrating five years of helping men, women and children escape violence.
The Tanya Shand Milk and Cookie run is named after a woman who died at the hands of her intimate partner in 2013. Shand was found dead in a Rothesay, N.B. apartment and her young daughter was also present.
Corporal Kelley McIntyre of the K.V. Regional Police Force arrested the person responsible and tells us she had a hard time with that call.
“Tanya’s sister had developed a friendship through this entire incident. It came around as a result of a conversation around the kitchen table one night about what we can do so another family doesn’t have to face another tragedy.” McIntyre said.
Show your support for all of the women who are gone but not forgotten. Runners, walkers, and cheerleaders are welcome!

It honours women like Shand who died in the same way like Alice Leadlay, Cathy Bawn, Cindy Irving, Gail Foster and Melanie Davis.
McIntyre says the need is real offering a recent example that just in the last week she spent $1500 to help three women find a safe place to live.
“That can be anything from getting grocery orders to getting supplies, to setting them up in an apartment and finding a location that’s safe,” McIntyre said.
The Tanya Shand Milk & Cookie Run starts Saturday at 10 a.m. with the one-kilometre kids fun run.
The 5-kilometre run/walk for adults follows at 11 a.m. with a cookie buffet at the finish line.
