Peak TV showed no signs of slowing down, while also spreading the wealth at the 71st Emmy Awards, which took place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
HBO’s Game of Thrones won Outstanding Drama series, but one of the biggest, but very welcome, surprises was Amazon’s Fleabag, a British black comedy about a dysfunctional young woman living in London, winning Outstanding Comedy Series.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, plays the titular Fleabag and created, wrote and produced the BBC America smash Killing Eve, additionally won Emmys for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Writing for a Comedy Series. Fleabag director Harry Bradbeer also won in his category in Directing for a Comedy Series for Fleabag’s “Episode 1.”
Fleabag won the most Emmys of the evening with four awards.
The ceremony also made history. Billy Porter was the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama as the New York City ballroom emcee Pray Tell on Pose. Jharrell Jerome, who played Corey Wise, one of the exonerated Central Park Five, in Netflix’s When They See Us was the first Afro-Latino to win an Emmy for acting and the youngest Emmy winner for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie at twenty-one years old.
Multiple Emmy winners used their platform, from Michelle Williams addressing gender and racial pay equality, to RuPaul encouraging the audience to register to vote, to Patricia Arquette tearfully calling for more aid to the transgender community, put a spotlight on worthy and critical causes.
HBO won nine Emmys, but Amazon was close behind with seven Emmy wins reflecting the continued ascent and influence of streaming services in television and the entertainment industry. Netflix won four Emmys while FX and NBC won two each.
