Two Maritime youth actors will be travelling to Europe with the Atlantic Repertory Company, a subset of the Saint John Theatre Company.
Caroline Bell from Quispamsis and Kenzie Delo from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, will play Mary and Charlie in an upcoming production of Mary’s Wedding, a story about young love set during the First World War.
The play, written by Canadian playwright Stephen Massicotte, will travel to three cities in Germany, and have a final show in Paris.
Director Stephen Tobias says the tour is made possible thanks to generous funding.
“We are able to do this because of the support of the RBC Emerging Artists, because of the support of the province of New Brunswick, and also with the support with the Canada Council for the Arts,” he said.
The ARC is currently in the second phase of a three-year pilot project. The program is designed to provide working opportunities for young theatre professionals with ties to Atlantic Canada.
Tobias says Mary’s Wedding provides “two great roles for young actors,” and the opportunity to travel abroad.
Education and Labour Minister Trevor Holder says this is also an opportunity to showcase Atlantic Canada’s talent.
“This is another amazing opportunity to develop local talent here in the Saint John area, and to take it abroad and to showcase to the rest of the world what can happen right here in Saint John, New Brunswick,” he said.
Tobias says the tour will also align with Remembrance Day commemorations during a special performance in Paris.
“We’re going to close off the tour with a special performance at the Cultural Centre in the Canadian Embassy in Paris on November the 7th as part of their Remembrance Day celebration events and commemoration events for the embassy,” he said.
Mary’s Wedding opens in Saint John on October 8th, and will have performances in St. Andrews, Sussex and Fredericton before flying to Konstanz, Germany on October 20th.
