The president of the NB Medical Society says the fact a recent report shows the average salary for a doctor in New Brunswick is over $330,000, doesn’t mean they are
taking that kind of money home.
Dr. Serge Melanson says although for many it may seem like a great deal of money, that is gross income, not net pay.
“By virtue of the comfortable living that physicians make is that they are in the highest tax bracket and in New Brunswick we are one of the highest-taxed provinces when it comes to people making that type of income,” stated Melanson.
Melanson says although the society doesn’t actively recruit, he says the health authorities need to offer real competitive salaries with other provinces in order to attract doctors to come practice in New Brunswick.
“You are in a global competition, certainly a national competition at attracting these health care professionals to your province, for example, you have to be competitive in respects to how you are going to be remunerating them,” said Melanson.
