Saint John police say it is fortunate no one was hurt after a wrong-way chase on Highway 1 Tuesday evening.
At 9:45 PM, a canine unit cruiser saw a vehicle speeding on Rothesay Avenue eastbound with no lights on.
When officers tried to stop it, the driver sped up Rothesay Avenue and crashed into a light standard at the end of the westbound off-ramp from Highway 1.
Police say the vehicle had major damage, including a blown tire, but the driver then went the wrong way up the westbound lane of Highway 1 at speeds reaching around 170 km/h.
The vehicle then left the road near the Allison baseball fields. When the driver tried to flee on foot, the K-9 unit was brought out and the man surrendered to officers.
He is facing charges of dangerous driving and driving without a licence.
