The CIBC Run for the Cure takes place this weekend, but for one Saint Johner, the run is personal.
Lamby McGuire, 47, is a metastatic breast cancer survivor.
She says she hopes to raise awareness about the disease by telling her story.
“In 2017, I was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer. When I was first diagnosed, it had automatically hopped to stage four because it has metastasized to my bones. There is no cure, I will be in treatment for the rest of my life,” she said in an interview.
She says she has undergone many treatments in her life already, and things have managed to stay steady.
“So far, I’m feeling great,” she said.
McGuire says this year, she’ll be running with her team ‘Lamby’s Army,’ a dedicated group of people who have supported her during this journey.
“Since day one, I’ve had a whole support network of people, online and in person, and it’s absolutely overwhelming at times the outpouring of support that I get from friends and family all over the place. It’s quite amazing,” she said.
So far this year, McGuire’s team has raised $2,300, which she’s really proud of.
McGuire says on Sunday, runners will descend on Rockwood Park.
“Our run is taking place at the Fisher Lakes in Saint John, at Rockwood Park. The run starts at 1 o’clock. There will be busses that shuttle people back and forth from First Atlantic on Chesley Drive starting at 10 o’clock, and they run until 3,” she said.
“People who don’t want to participate in the run, if they just want to come and support, there’ll be lots of picnic tables set up there for them to sit and enjoy the day.”
She says there’s still time to sign up for the 5 km or 1 km race online, or people can register the day of.
