A 42-year old man will spend more time behind bars after a violent incident in Saint John, N.B. this past spring involving his girlfriend.
Matthew Allaby was accused of punching her so hard she heard her nose “crunch” and stuffing a cloth in her mouth to prevent her from screaming for help.
The victim told police she thought he would kill her.
Allaby agreed to the statement of facts read by the Crown in provincial court on Monday.
Provincial court judge Marco Cloutier called it a “disturbing case of domestic violence”.
He noted the victim was punched directly in the face and while Allaby pleaded guilty to the charges, he has a long criminal record with many assaults.
He served time for assault back in 2011.
The defence noted Allaby has a long history of substance abuse and that alcohol and crystal meth were factors in this incident but, he has stayed clean while in custody.
Allaby was given a 13-month sentence with credit for the six months he has already served.
He also gets a six-month supervised probation order to deal with substance abuse and anger management and he’s banned from owning weapons for life.
Allaby is due to be sentenced on other matters at court in Woodstock on Tuesday, October 8th, 2019.
