If you are one of those people who despises raking up fallen leaves, here is some news you can pass on to the taskmaster of the household.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada says leaving a thick layer of leaves on your lawn is good for the lawn and more.
NCC’s Andrew Holland says “It creates a place for many insects and pollinators to try and tough out the winter months, some people do not like insects or bugs but that is an important food source for birds come wintertime.”
Holland says you need to leave a thick blanket but not large piles because that will not help your lawn.
“If you leave a pile of leaves if you rake them up and let your kids jump in them and you just leave them there and don’t spread them out, that can suffocate your lawn,” stated Holland.
Holland says leaving leaves on the ground can also help with soil erosion issues.
“This is an issue in many areas where water runs off and takes away precious soil, nutrients and whatever goes to into our lakes and streams having the leaves it helps retain some of the water on your property into the ground,” stated Holland.
