A spike in recent foot and bicycle traffic on the Harbour Bridge prompting a warning from the Saint John Police.
Communications manager Jim Hennessy points out there is tremendous risk to anyone trying to walk or ride a bike across the bridge.
Between January 1st, 2019 and Monday, police officers have stopped 84 people for illegal walking across the bridge.
“New signs have been placed at either end of the bridge by the Department of Transportation following a meeting with the SJPF and it is hoped, anyone thinking about walking across the structure, will not,” adds Hennessy.
Saint John Police are adding another deterrent as well.
“Officers have offered rides in the past to ensure someone’s safety but a fine of $172.50 will now be issued to deter people from walking on the Harbour Bridge,” says Hennessy.
Hennessy points out how a lot of traffic is moving quickly along that bridge during the morning and afternoon commutes.
“Especially a transport truck, it’s a vehicle that isn’t easy to manoeuvre or get stopped. We don’t want anyone to take the risk.” Hennessy said.
