Dieppe is one of five Francophone communities in the province that will acquire electric vehicles.
They, along with the municipalities of Beresford, Saint-Quentin, Shippagan and Tracadie, are taking part in a pilot project that will make electric cars available to residents.
The New Brunswick association of Francophone municipalities started the pilot program to reduce its members’ carbon footprint.
Mayor of Dieppe, Yvon Lapierre says this is also part of the city’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emission.
In 2016, they set a goal to reduce green house gas emissions by six per cent by 2021.
Vehicles will be available to the public with the help of a car-sharing program, residents will be able to register to use the vehicles through an app.
Lapierre says 50 per cent of each vehicle is sponsored by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
